A new white paper has been published by Water Europe with the contribution of the Water Quality research group at INL - International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory. Water Europe, initiated by the European Commission in 2004, issues white papers to inform readers about complex water-related topics in a concise and targeted way.
In our daily lives, we all use and are exposed to a diversity of chemical compounds. However, many of these substances pose severe health risks to different ecosystems. Although the EU Action Plan expects to replace toxic chemicals with safer materials, there are chemicals which will remain in the environment from their use in the past. Achieving zero pollution ambitions by 2050 requires a comprehensive understanding of sources of water pollution, its impacts, and opportunities for mitigation.
In this recent publication from Water Europe, a series of key questions about water pollution are raised, knowledge gaps are identified, and several recommendations for policymakers are made. This combined knowledge from international experts from different disciplines is crucial to prevent further pollution, protect people and ecosystems, helping to work towards achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
