'Surviving the impact of raindrops' by Jana Winderen, a new exhibition at the INL Gallery at gnration

Until April 30, the INL Gallery at gnration Arts Center in Braga, Portugal, will feature “'Surviving the impact of raindrops' by Jana Winderen, a new exhibition within the INL Scale Travels program, that brings together Arts and Science at the INL Gallery at gnration.

This new exhibition is brought to us by Jana Winderen is an artist who currently lives and works in Norway. Her practice pays particular attention to audio environments and to creatures that are hard for humans to access, both physically and aurally – deep underwater, inside the ice, or in frequency ranges inaudible to the human ear. Her activities include site-specific and spatial audio installations and concerts, which have been exhibited and performed internationally in major institutions and public spaces.

‘Surviving the Impact Of Raindrops’ is a sound installation that results from an artistic residency she carried out with the Water Quality Research Group at the INL – International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory dedicated to studying water quality. Composed of eight channels, this installation is based on recordings that the sound artist made under and above the water surface, of fish, crustaceans, aquatic insects, and bats.

At the nanoscale, nanoparticles can accumulate in the body of aquatic creatures and, possibly, all living things. On this scale, insects are immensely large.

The way in which oxygen exchanges happen for insects, whether these air bubbles can function as an extension of the insects' ears or as an amplifier for sound, sparks Jana Winderen's interest. The stridulation, a technique used by insects in which they rub parts of the body to produce sound, when activated mutually, forms what appears to be a chorus of crickets, but underwater.

Using sound, many of these underwater creatures navigate, communicate and hunt. For the past 16 years, Jana Winderen has dedicated herself to listening to underwater environments. With a background in science and art, Winderen travels all over the world to record underwater sounds, from the Arctic to the most tropical parts of the ocean.
